Dancer reflects on her internship at The Point

Alana Jones talks to the Creative Eastleigh team about her 12 month dance administration internship at The Point, Eastleigh.

I applied for the Dance Administrator Internship initially as it seemed like an ideal role for learning administration and project coordination skills as well as teaching, with the added bonus of being at a venue so close to home. I did not realise it at the time, but it was the best decision I could have made, especially as it is so hard to find paid graduate training schemes.

It feels very surreal to be writing and reflecting on my time at The Point, knowing that it will soon come to an end. I have had the most amazing year and have felt as though I have gained invaluable knowledge and skills which I now feel confident to move on to my next venture. I will soon be travelling around South East Asia, a small break before embarking on the next stage in my career! When my feet are firmly back on British soil I hope to continue working in a freelance capacity, preferably in teaching, producing and project coordination.

I have particularly enjoyed working with the youth companies, taking the Point Youth Dance Company 15 to 18 years group to perform at U.Dance in Exeter, being involved with the Shobana Jeyasingh Curtain Raiser project and taking the Hampshire Satellite Centre for Advance Training Cohort to perform at The Place, a prestigious Theatre in London!

I have had such a wonderful year at The Point, and want to thank all the staff for being so friendly and supportive, especially the dance team! I have continuously been encouraged to take training courses whilst in my role, and the staff have always been happy to give advice on developing my skills before I complete my internship so I am ready for the next challenge!
